Around the farm, our Leghorn chicks turned 10 weeks old today. On Monday afternoon, we had a bit of an emergency with them. The hinge on their small coop came off so they could escape. It was after 5pm and over 100° Fahrenheit. I signaled Matt and we got a large dog kennel set up inside of the large chicken castle. Then we moved all nine of the Leghorns, one at a time, to the kennel. They are much too small to mix in with our full grown hens. If we did that, the hens would peck them. The hens and the Leghorns have to get used to each other. We were able to move the chicks right by the air conditioner in the castle so they are much cooler. They are doing well but the hens are not happy. They have no idea who these strange chicks are or why they are in the middle of their play yard.

Meanwhile, our baby chicks just turned four weeks old and they are having a lot of fun in their chick coop. We just took all of the chicks and hens some ice to play with and nibble on because of the heat and humidity.

The garden is thriving and there is so much being harvested each day: grapes, strawberries, blackberries, onions, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, peppers of all sorts, cucumbers, and more. I don't even know what to do with anymore of it. We sold a little but mostly, we have given it away to neighbors and friends. I cooked a bunch of tomatoes down and made some tomato puree. We made raisins and grape juice. We have cooked a lot of yellow squash, mostly in the oven or in olive oil in the frying pan.
