Moon Garden

A moon garden involves growing white and/or silvery colored flowers and plants that seem to light up when the full moon is in the sky from dusk through the darkness of night. That reminds me of a soap opera that my grandmother always watched, The Edge Of Night.

You can create this enchanting space yourself. This garden is designed to be enjoyed at night, with plants and features that shimmer and shine under the moonlight.

Let's explore how you can create your own glowing garden, a haven of tranquility and beauty under the night sky.

Moon Garden - 5/26-6/1/2025

A moon garden really pops in the full moon!A moon garden really pops in the full moon!

Imagine stepping into your backyard after sunset, greeted by a soft, ethereal glow. This isn't a scene from a fantasy novel, but the magic of a garden glowing under the full moon. Take a seat and enjoy the cool air and the glowing beauty.

Planning Your Moon Garden

moongarden2

First, choose a location. Think about where the moon's light best reaches your yard. A slightly open area is ideal, allowing the moonlight to wash over your plants.

Consider the size. A moon garden can be any size, from a small corner to a larger area. Start small and expand as you get more comfortable.

Sketch out a basic design. This helps you visualize the layout and choose the right plants.

Moon Garden - Choosing the Right Plants

moongarden3

The key to a moon garden is selecting plants with light-colored foliage and blooms. These reflect the moonlight, creating that magical glow.

White flowers are a classic choice. Think of elegant white roses, fragrant jasmine, or delicate moonflowers, which bloom at night. White zinnias, shasta daisies, and sweet alyssum are also good choices. David's Garden Seeds® has the seeds for many of these choices.

Light colored plants, like dusty miller with its silvery leaves, add texture and contrast.

Variegated plants, with their patterns of light and dark, also catch the moonlight beautifully.

Consider the height and spread of your plants. Taller plants in the back, shorter ones in the front.

Moon Garden - Adding Elements of Reflection

Enhance the moonlight's effect with reflective surfaces. A small pond or birdbath mirrors the moon and adds a touch of magic.

White gravel or pebbles create pathways that gleam in the darkness.

Strategically placed mirrors can reflect moonlight into darker corners of your garden.

Moon Garden - Incorporating Fragrance

moongarden5

Certain scents can take you back to a happy or a sad time in your life, right? They sure do for me. Let's make the moon garden a happy place filled with happy scents. Night-blooming flowers often have intoxicating scents. Fill your moon garden with fragrant plants like night-blooming jasmine or evening primrose. I have honeysuckle and jasmine plants in my backyard that I love to smell and some of the blooms are white.

The combination of moonlight and fragrance creates a truly sensory experience.

Moon Garden Vegetables and Herbs

moongarden6

You might be wondering, "What food plants will grow in a moon garden and glow?" While most edible plants don't have the light colors needed for a moon garden, some herbs and vegetables can still contribute.

White-flowered herbs like chamomile and white-stemmed varieties of Swiss chard can add a touch of brightness. White eggplant and white pumpkins would be good examples of vegetables to place in it.

Consider planting variegated sage or thyme for their light and dark patterned leaves.

Keep in mind, the primary focus of a moon garden is to look pretty, not for edible plants.

Moon Garden - Creating a Relaxing Atmosphere

moongarden7

Your moon garden should be a place of peace and tranquility. Add comfortable seating, like a bench with cushions or a hammock.

Soft lighting, like solar-powered lanterns or string lights, can enhance the ambiance without overpowering the moonlight.

Consider adding a water feature for the soothing sound of trickling water.

Maintaining Your Moon Garden

moongarden8

Like any garden, a moon garden requires regular maintenance. Water your plants as needed, especially during dry periods. Right now, with temperatures in the 100s, we have been watering almost every single day.

Deadhead spent blooms to encourage new growth.

Fertilize your plants occasionally to keep them healthy and vibrant.

Mulch around your plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Regularly inspect your plants for pests and diseases. Plant some marigolds and nasturtiums in between your moon garden plants to keep the bad bugs down.

Enjoy the process of creating and nurturing your moon garden. It’s a rewarding experience to watch it transform under the moonlight.

A moon garden offers a unique way to connect with nature and enjoy your outdoor space after dark. With careful planning and the right plants, you can create a magical, glowing retreat right in your backyard.

Remember, the key is to choose plants with light-colored foliage and blooms. White flowers are a classic choice, and light colored plants add texture and contrast.

Don’t forget about the reflective elements like mirrors and small ponds! These enhance the moonlight's effect, creating a truly magical atmosphere.

A moon garden is more than just a garden; it’s an experience. It’s a place to relax, unwind, and connect with the beauty of nature under the night sky. The air is just a bit cooler after dark so you will feel better than you would in the daytime heat.

So, embrace the magic of the moon and create a garden that glows under its gentle light. You’ll be amazed by the beauty and tranquility it brings to your evenings.

moongarden9

Creating a moon garden is a journey of discovery. Experiment with different plants and elements to find what works best for you.

Don't be afraid to get creative. Your moon garden is a reflection of your personal style and preferences.

Remember, the goal is to create a space that you enjoy and that brings you peace. Don't forget that some days each month, the moon is not out at night. Maybe incorporate a few solar lights for those nights when there is no light from the moon.

A moon garden is a gift that keeps on giving. It’s a place to escape the stresses of daily life and connect with the natural world if you like to be outside at night.

So, take the time to create a moon garden that is uniquely yours. You won’t regret it.

The beauty of a moon garden lies in its simplicity. It’s not about having the most elaborate or expensive plants.

It’s about creating a space that feels magical and inviting. A space where you can relax and enjoy the beauty of the moon.

Start small and let your creativity guide you. You’ll be amazed by what you can create.

A moon garden is a testament to the power of nature. It’s a reminder that beauty can be found even in the darkest of nights.

Embrace the darkness and let the moon light your way. Your moon garden awaits.

Imagine sitting in your moon garden, surrounded by the soft glow of moonlight and the sweet fragrance of night-blooming flowers. It’s a truly magical experience.

So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your moon garden today!

With a little effort, you can create a space that you’ll cherish for years to come. A moon garden is a gift to yourself and to the natural world.

Embrace the beauty of the night and create a moon garden that is uniquely yours.

You’ll be amazed by the magic it brings to your life.

Good morning. Last night, I saw that Jase Robertson announced the passing of the Duck Commander himself, Phil Robertson. Phil walked through the gates of Heaven and we all know he heard what we all want to hear, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Jase Robertson and me at Whites Ferry Road Church in the sanctuary right before the 2nd service started.Jase Robertson and me at Whites Ferry Road Church in the sanctuary right before the 2nd service started.

Phil has brought thousands of people to Christ and baptized many of them personally. I have read his books, watched him on Duck Dynasty and Unashamed, and we had the privilege of sitting in on one of his Sunday School classes at Whites Ferry Road Church in West Monroe, Louisiana. The place was packed so I did not get to meet him, but I did meet Jase.

Happy Memorial Day! Our 25% off all seeds sale ends tonight at midnight CDT so hurry and visit David's Garden Seeds now!

Let's remember why we have a long weekend.Let's remember why we have a long weekend.

Memorial Day is the time we think about those who were killed in the line of service to our great country. When I was little, my grandparents referred to it as Decoration Day, although it was called Memorial Day starting after World War I so they must have gotten that from their parents. Decoration Day was a day set aside to decorate graves of soldiers killed during the Civil War. Then in 1971, Memorial Day became a federal holiday.

We are working today because there is too much to do and not enough people to do it.

I made biscuits and gravy for breakfast and I need to get on out there to work on orders.

Old Glory is flying in the wind and she is tattered. This flag is just 3 months old and David paid extra because it was made in the USA. Did not last at all.Old Glory is flying in the wind and she is tattered. This flag is just 3 months old and David paid extra because it was made in the USA. Did not last at all.

The wind has kicked up and it is miserably hot and dry. I have been watering and I cleaned the pond. I am currently refilling it.

We had steak and shrimp for lunch. It was so good. We are now under a tornado watch. It has been quite breezy. No rain but it is supposed to rain at 10pm.

I have been filling orders all day long. It is now 6pm and I am sick of it. We did not have a single customer but one couple from Leakey came by and bought a shelving unit. That was it. A long hot day and I should have been enjoying myself in the house folding laundry and doing dishes. I guess I can have that fun this evening if we ever go inside...

I went in at 7pm. David told me to pack an overnight bag because there was a tornado watch. I did and then packed stuff for the puppies.

He and Matt came in around 8pm. Matt gassed up the truck and we were ready to roll if the tornado came.

There was quite a lightning show but no rain. The rain finally started somewhere after 11:30pm I think.

This orange zinnia is looking pretty today. This orange zinnia is looking pretty today.

Good morning. I woke up at 6:15am and the dogs and I were the only ones here. I was just about to make breakfast when I texted David. He said breakfast was coming from Farm to Familia. Matt was out front waiting for it.

We did not get blown away in a tornado last night so I am grateful for that. We got 3/4 of an inch of rain. I was hoping for at least two inches.

The breakfast tacos from Farm to Familia are delicious and the price was not bad. Their hot sauce is good, too.

David just left for jury duty. We have a lot of orders to get through. I already have two full bags of mail for the mailman to take today.

I just put up a new sale. Buy four or more seed items and save 20% now.

David said that Nacho will be out to buy one of his grills and firewood. If anyone is interested in buying shelving, a building, or just about anything else, contact David at davidsgardenseeds@outlook.com.

It is now 1:45pm. David just called and was dismissed so now he can have lunch and come home until they call him again.

Meanwhile, we have had zero visitors. Matt is making envelopes and I am filling and pulling orders.

It is hot and sunny but Alexa says it is only 79°. No more rain at all today, although they said we would get it several times this morning.

We finally did have one customer this afternoon. I worked until 7pm trying to get orders out. I gave up when I noticed my legs are swollen. Too much sitting. It was a very long day.

I watched a video today about GMO soil. I had never heard of that before but from what I can gather, you get it when you add harmful chemicals to your soil. After that, the soil won't let you grow anything good to eat. Maybe I will do a page on that soon.

Good morning. I woke up in the night and it was raining. We got a half inch overnight! Yay!

I ate another of the breakfast tacos from yesterday. They were really good. This morning, I have a doctor appointment about my hand.

David informed me that we are doing away with some of our inventory as it is not selling like it used to. That is fine because it takes a lot of time to put together.

I saw the doctor. He is referring me to a neurologist in San Antonio for testing. Fun times. Now to wait for the neurology office to call...

I spent the day closing orders and counting seeds--lots of them. Matt made a lot of envelopes.

One of our five year old chickens passed this afternoon. Chickens live to be about five--our original chickens are just beyond five. We still have a few of them left but I am sure they will be passing as well. Next, we have some three year olds because I did not buy any the second year.

We worked until 7pm and then ran in the house to see two hours of our favorite chef. We ate whatever we could find in the fridge and during Gordon, I got a text from a friend about the orange sunset. I grabbed my phone and ran out the front door just in time to capture this.

I missed the best of it but it is still pretty!I missed the best of it but it is still pretty!

Zinnias come in so many shapes and colors.Zinnias come in so many shapes and colors.

Good morning! It is cloudy and cool right now. They say it will rain at 3pm. I guess we will have to wait and see.

David has already gone out to work and it is 7am. I made eggs. He gave me a letter to put out in a newsletter which I just sent out. Here it is if you don't get the newsletter:

Hey Fellow Gardeners,

David here.

First, let me tell you about the sale we have going on right now. All of our seeds are 20% off when you buy four or more packs but that won't last long. Soon, I will have just some seeds on sale at a time. Now is a good time for you to take advantage and purchase your seeds for the fall garden.

We are making big changes to our facilities this summer in order to better serve our fellow gardeners.

We are offering sales because I do not want to move the seeds.
We also have a lot of other stuff we are getting rid of, such as
wall lockers, file cabinet, tables, chairs, buildings (several sizes and shapes), wire shelving on wheels, tools, household appliances, commercial sinks, printers, seed counters and just a whole lot of stuff. We were canning, having classes, and other things that required all of these.

We are getting old and wish to scale back on the things we do so we can do some of the things we have not done such as take a cruise, visit England and Ireland, and drive the United States seeing the sights. We are getting tired of the daily grind.

If you have $3 million, you can have it all to include the business, eight acres of land, a 2200 square foot, double wide home, lots of patios, an above ground pool (in all honesty you will probably want to get rid of it and get a new one), rabbit hutch, goat pen, chicken coops, (chicken, goats and bees go with us), 16,000 square feet of raised beds with 8,000 square foot under shadecloth, two greenhouses, 1600 square foot of asparagus, hydroponics, over 100 different types of fruit and nut trees with grape vines. There is also a backup generator that runs the whole compound of 8 buildings. All sorts of stuff. A well and city water. The trademark and name are yours if you want them. We have koi and gold fish which will stay here in the pond with the gazebo.

Beach front property only without the water (Sand is what we have here and stuff really grows good in it). All the wind, stickers and weeds you could ever want.

To be honest, this would only work for you if you paid cash. I don't think you could operate it with debt and survive. My headache can become your headache, backache, sleepless nights, and so on.
My property taxes can become your property taxes. Who wants to have their life changed??

After writing this I need a nap.

Our Department of Agriculture representative came to visit us this morning. She had some appointments in Pleasanton so she thought she would make a quick stop here to see how we are doing. We had a very quick visit.

I packed seeds as I needed them but for most of the day, I filled orders. We had one couple from near Victoria, Texas, come to shop and we had a very nice visit.

At 3:30pm, we took a bag full of mail to the post office that we closed after the mailman came. From there, we went over to SoTex Farms for a short visit.

After that, we went back home and started working again. I closed orders from 5pm to 7pm and then went in the house, put my swollen feet up and fell asleep. I got up, showered, and at 8pm, David came in. I made grilled cheese and tomato soup for dinner.

Happy Friday!Happy Friday!

I woke up at 6:15am and it is pouring! We are finally getting hit with a good amount of rain. It is still dark out so I cannot see but it is coming down hard!

I just checked the numbers and yesterday was the best day we have had for website orders in many months so we praise the Lord for that! We got over ten times more sales yesterday than last Thursday.

The rain stopped around 9:40am and we got one full inch! Now the sun is coming out to heat the place up...I am not ready for that again.

The rest of the day was filling orders and mailing them until about 7pm. Compared to yesterday, today's orders were only about 1/4th of what we received yesterday.

Good morning. The week flew by. David says he is ordering barbacoa for breakfast. I hope it is on its way because I am starving.

Yes, the barbacoa arrived. David got it at the gate. It was good. Now it is time to get ready and go to work.

Photo showing stick, a bag of David Seeds, and the sunflowers. Clearly, this is not our company.Photo showing stick, a bag of David Seeds, and the sunflowers. Clearly, this is not our company.

We received an email from someone who bought a pack of David Seeds from ConAgra to eat. This person tells us that there was a wooden stick in the bag of sunflower seeds and this person claims to have choked on it and now wants us to monetarily compensate him/her. A photo of the bag, the stick, and some of the seeds was sent to us.

First of all, our seeds are not edible. They are to plant in the ground to grow food. Second, she has a bag of David Seeds, not David's Garden Seeds so he/she has contacted the wrong company. What amazes me is that the pumpkin seeds are way smaller than this giant stick of several inches. How is that the stick made the person choke but the little seeds did not? How did the person not see this huge stick and why would he/she put the stick into his/her mouth?

We get emails, letters, and phone calls from people who eat David Seeds all of the time. Sometimes, they want free products sent to them, sometimes they want money from us. Again, our products are never in question. They are just choosing to contact the wrong company. David Seeds is owned by ConAgra out of California. We are not David Seeds. We are a garden seed company and our seeds are for planting, not eating. They can't tell the difference between the two names of David Seeds and David's Garden Seeds

Nacho is here bright and early on a Saturday morning cutting our property. Apparently he is doing it so he can have a grill instead of paying for it that David was going to sell. The stickers are growing tall again so this is a good thing!

We had one customer today. He bought eggs and a fall seed set. It is never too early to start thinking about your fall garden.

I worked until about 5pm and then came inside to get things going for dinner. I let the dogs out in the backyard and went about my business. After about 10 minutes, I opened the door. Two came in. I called for Pamela and nothing. The yard is fenced so she had to be there. I called again and I saw a bit of black poking out from under the skirted shed. Her head appeared but she could not get herself all the way out. She popped back under. I called again. After a few minutes, she dug her way out.

There was nothing for me to do but put her in the bathtub. I texted David and told him. He had Matt fill in the tunnel. I bathed her and got a backache but at least she was clean.

Here is the tractor mowing our part of the field. It was so nice of her. Here is the tractor mowing our part of the field. It was so nice of her.
Here is the field all mowed and looking good. Here is the field all mowed and looking good.

Yesterday afternoon, we heard something, looked out and saw the new neighbor cutting the grass over in the field with a tractor. David went out and introduced himself and asked if she would cut ours and we would pay her. She said no need for pay and that she would cut it. She finished her part of the field and went home. I thought that was that.

Around 6pm today, I looked out the window and the tractor was on our part of the field. David sent Matt outside with money for gas which he gave her as she was tractoring on by. We sure appreciate it.

I made pork ribs and a lot of veggies including a gigantic pink banana jumbo squash, our first, from my garden. It was really tasty. I had no idea but I decided to grow some. There are more huge squash fruits out there on the vine. This was big enough to serve the entire neighborhood. I only cooked about 1/4 of it and we had leftovers.

We watched a 1954 movie called Them. It was pretty good and gross because it involved ants. I hate ants.

Sunday, June 1, 2025

Here it is morning already. I made breakfast and now I have to go out and take care of all of the animals.

First, I went out to feed the fish. I took time to look at the vegetables and fruit growing. Our bees were working hard pollinating flowers.

The animals are all fine but it is so hot and humid already!

Some of the hens came over for a quick photo. Some of the hens came over for a quick photo.

We went to church and then some from the church went to a fast food place nearby. David called to find out where they were going and we went too. It was kind of crowded with lots of tables and picnic benches which can make it hard to get in and out of if you need to get something, like plastic utensils.

Now, nothing was behind me so I could easily get out because I was close to the door. Another person at our table needed utensils. I said they were by the drinks and I would be happy to get you some. I was told no as this person struggled to get up and out of the picnic bench with another table directly behind.

I stood up and said it would be easy for me to get them two more times and was told no again both times. Puzzled, I sat back down. Another person at our table said that he/she would get them. That person got a thank you--made me feel like dirt. Whatever.

We ate quickly and got out of there because it was so hot. Their air conditioner was broken and the ceiling was leaking behind me. It got hotter in there by the minute.

From there, we went to Walmart. David sent me in and he stayed in the truck with the A/C on. I guess it is a good thing because the place was crowded. I grabbed five items and got to the checkout.

It is 5:22pm and 92°. I have not yet gone out to see the animals as it is just too hot. I spent the afternoon pulling orders. Now I am going to fold some laundry and maybe get some vacuuming in.
