Understanding the Importance of Non-Toxic Plants
Before we jump into the list of 10 non-toxic indoor plants for pet owners, let's chat about why avoiding poisonous houseplants is key when you're sharing your home with small children or pets.
Pets, especially cats and dogs, have a funny way of exploring the world with their mouths. The same goes for kids! Anything within reach could become a chew toy or snack. The last thing you'd want is for them to take a bite out of a toxic plant, resulting in a trip to the vet or pediatrician. Knowing what specific plants are safe to have in the house is crucial.
For instance, when I was pregnant with my first baby, I realized that the poinsettia plant I got when I was single would soon have to go. Once I brought my newborn preemie home, I gave that plant away even though I knew it would be months before he would crawl.
This brings us to the importance of doing a little homework before picking plants. Not only does it keep your loved ones safe, but it also allows you to enjoy your indoor garden with peace of mind.
Getting Started with Non-Toxic Plant Choices
Alright, let's dig into part two! Now that we're on the same page about the why, let's talk about the what. What specific plants are safe to have in your house that won't harm pets or children, you ask?
We've got a stellar line-up of plant choices that are both aesthetic and safe. Certain plants, when ingested, don't pose a threat to our fur babies or little ones. Let's introduce the first five on our list, and I promise, they'll brighten up any corner of your home!
Spider Plant: These vibrant, spiky delights are not only non-toxic but also super easy to care for. Plus, they offer a retro vibe that's hard to resist.
Boston Fern: With their delicate fronds, Boston Ferns add an elegant touch. They're excellent air purifiers, too, giving you not just beauty but better air quality!
Bamboo Palm: Looking for a tropical flare? The Bamboo Palm is safe for both kids and pets and provides a lush, green backdrop to any room.
Calathea: Talk about a showstopper! Calatheas feature colorful patterns and are full of personality. Not to mention, they won't cause harm if someone decides to have a taste.
Areca Palm: Known for their graceful leaves that fan out beautifully, these palms are perfect for creating an indoor oasis. The best part? They’re non-toxic for pets and kids.
More Plant Picks for the Safe-Home Enthusiast
Can't get enough? I've got you covered with more gems in part three. We're halfway through our list of 10 non-toxic indoor plants for pet owners, with more exciting options to spruce up your living space.
Baby Rubber Plant: They might sound cute, but these little guys are also functional! Easy to care for, they’re ideal for new plant parents and won't harm any wandering hands or paws.
Parlor Palm: These palms have been a favorite for over a century, fulfilling the role of a safe yet striking houseplant in many homes.
Ponytail Palm: With a fun, quirky appearance and little maintenance required, these palms are perfect. They look unique without being dangerous for inquisitive companions.
Pearl Plant: Compact and capable of thriving indoors, the Pearl Plant can sit pretty on any tabletop or desk, providing a splash of green without the toxicity.
Blue Echeveria: Need some color? The Blue Echeveria delivers with its succulent charm and is completely safe for both kids and critters.
Tips for Thriving Non-Toxic Indoor Plants
Above is our final list of 10 non-toxic indoor plants for pet owners, so let's shift gears and talk about keeping those plants thriving. After all, healthy plants mean a healthier home for everyone involved.
One of the best tips I can offer is to pick the right spot in your home for your plants. Light conditions are vital, so choose a spot with the right amount of sun (or shade, depending on the plant).
Watering wisely is the next step. Over or under-watering can harm your plants, so always check the soil moisture before watering. Remember, different plants have different needs.
Feeding your plants with a good-quality plant fertilizer now and then will ensure they receive all the nutrients they need to thrive.
Lastly, keep an eye out for any pest issues or signs of sickness before they become serious problems. It’s easier to deal with plant issues when caught early.
Integrating Plants into the Home
Now that your plants are growing like champs, it’s time to talk about blending them into your home decor. Plants are more than just living entities; they’re part of your interior design!
Try placing taller plants, like the Areca or Parlor Palm, in corners to soften hard edges and draw the eye upward, giving the illusion of a larger space.
Smaller plants like the Baby Rubber Plant can adorn bookshelves, desks, or kitchen countertops, adding a hint of nature where you need it most.
Consider using creative plant stands or baskets to elevate your greenery and create visual interest at varying heights.
Grouping your plants can make a more impactful statement. Use a mix of plant types and sizes for a dynamic look.
Personal Stories and Insights
Here's where we get personal. I've had my fair share of green adventures, and let me tell you, there's nothing like walking into a home that feels alive with nature's charm.
My cat, Kitty, was notorious for curiosity. With nontoxic plants, I was able to relax, knowing she could investigate without any risk. And believe me, watching her befriend a sprawling Spider Plant is quite entertaining! She really did not mess with plants. I was smart enough to keep my plants up off the floor so the dogs could not reach them.

My grandmother Yorgensen had a huge green thumb for houseplants. She had a huge picture window in the living room and had several metal shelving units filled with houseplants that were always beautiful. She loved taking care of them. Of course, she did not have any pets and us kids were smart enough not to eat any of the plants, although I realize not all kids are intelligent enough to know that houseplants are to look at and not to eat.

Good morning! This week we are talking about nothing that will earn David's Garden Seeds any money because we do not sell any of these plants.
I woke up to the news that Barack Obama, while the sitting president, decided to make up the Russia collusion to ruin and remove Donald Trump from office just before Trump took office back in December of 2016. I wonder if he will be arrested for treason or if they will just let it lie...This is some pretty big news.
It is time to get ready for the day and attack the many orders I have due to our sale. You are welcome to come by if you live near our store. If not, you can take part by clicking this link. We have farm fresh eggs as well in our store.
If you would like to see the sheds and buildings that we have for sale, email David at davidsgardenseeds@outlook.com and David will set up a time. Some of the buildings we have for sale are big enough to be turned into a small home.
The man from Devine Hospice Thrift Store was here again this morning at 9am to pick up more of our stuff. He is becoming a close personal friend to all of us. He was here three times last week and several times the week before. I wonder what else there is left for him to take.
Nacho has just arrived to begin replacing the back fence that was removed by someone who does not live on our property. When we get more money, we will have to fence down the side between our two properties.
Kitten was waiting for me when I came to my office by the side door. She knows where the food comes from. She is lingering a bit longer when she sees me and she meows loudly but still won't let me anywhere near her. (I am still under the assumption that it is a girl.)
Nacho and his son finished the fence across the back of the new section of property that was previously ripped away by someone else. It only cost us just under a two week paycheck. Wasn't that a nice way for us to spend our money instead of paying our bills with it?
While he was here, Nacho also repaired the hole in the goat pen that Norton tore. Last week, George, Gracie, and their mother, Trixie, all got out of that hole in the back of Norton's pen. Matt was out there getting a tool for Nacho then when he saw Trixie going through the hole. Then he noticed George and Gracie already out and about. It is a good thing Nacho needed one of our tools or they could have completely escaped and gone out on the road where sand trucks pass by constantly.
I have not had time to go and inspect the new fence or the goat fence repair but I will do that tomorrow morning.
Those OGs who have been here with me since I started this website will remember the 10 by 16 green shed (aka the shed shack) where David and I lived for three and a half weeks with three dogs and a cat because Palm Harbor would not put our brand new manufactured home together. We have been using it as a storage shed for almost six years now.
Well, good news! Today, someone bought it. Now the only problem is getting it out of our fenced off backyard. David is thinking they will have to get a crane and lift it out and over the carport. We have plenty of other sheds to choose from but it is so cute. That is why I chose it over other sheds at the shed lot.
Why would we sell it? Because we are being property taxed to death on every single building we own out here. Our taxes on buildings just about tripled from last year so we need to sell our buildings because that tax is ridiculous.
Well, good morning. Yesterday, we received a bill from Methodist Hospital for David's heart ultrasound. They would not let us pay our copay back in June. So I got this bill showing that the hospital bill was for $486.52 and we owe $180.00. Now for most of my working life, I paid medical insurance claims. I was in the insurance business from 1981 until 2016 when I quit to become Mrs. David's Garden Seeds fulltime.
So I looked it up online to see what this was all about. The hospital bill was actually $10,288.81! The United Healthcare Medicare plan allowed $486.52 and paid $306.52 so that was a nice little write off by Methodist Hospital. Our portion is $180. How can they possibly charge over $10,000. He wasn't even in the exam room for 20 minutes!
