When you don't have much space in your yard for a garden, consider vertical gardening. Grow things going up and create room to plant.
Hey there, fellow gardeners! Do you dream of fresh veggies and vibrant blooms but feel limited by a small yard? Don't worry, you're not alone. Lots of people have tiny yards these days, but that doesn't mean you have to give up on your gardening dreams.
The secret? Vertical gardening! It's a game-changer for those of us short on space. Imagine transforming your fences, walls, and even balconies into thriving gardens. Sounds amazing, right? Well, it's totally doable, and I'm here to show you how.
We're going to explore the exciting world of vertical gardening together. You'll learn how to grow up the fence and maximize your space, even if it's limited. Get ready to discover how you can have a garden, no matter how small your yard.
First things first, why should you consider vertical gardening? Well, it's a fantastic solution for small yards. It allows you to use vertical space, like fences and walls, to grow your plants. This means you can grow more in less space.
Plus, vertical gardening can be really visually appealing. Imagine a wall covered in lush greenery and colorful flowers! It's a great way to add beauty to your outdoor space.
Before you jump in, it's a good idea to plan your vertical garden. Think about what you want to grow. Do you crave fresh tomatoes and peppers? Or are you more interested in fragrant herbs and beautiful flowers?
Next, consider the sunlight in your yard. Different plants have different sunlight needs. Make sure you choose plants that will thrive in the amount of sunlight your vertical garden will receive.
Now for the fun part – choosing your vertical gardening structures! There are tons of options out there. Trellises are great for climbing plants like cucumbers and beans. Wall-mounted planters are perfect for herbs and flowers.
You can even get creative and repurpose items like pallets or old ladders into vertical garden structures. The possibilities are endless!
With your structures in place, it's time to choose your plants. For vertical gardening, it's often best to choose compact varieties that won't get too big and heavy.
Think about the growing season too. Choose plants that will thrive in your climate and the time of year you're planting.
Now, let's get planting! Make sure you use a good quality potting mix that will provide your plants with the nutrients they need.
Watering is key, especially in vertical gardens. Since the soil tends to dry out faster, you'll need to water more frequently than you would with a traditional garden.
Don't forget to fertilize regularly to keep your plants healthy and productive.
Once your vertical garden is established, it's important to keep it looking its best. Regular pruning will help control the size of your plants and encourage new growth.
Keep an eye out for pests and diseases. Early detection is key to preventing serious problems.
The best part of vertical gardening? Harvesting your delicious veggies, fragrant herbs, or beautiful flowers! It's so rewarding to enjoy the fruits (and vegetables!) of your labor.
So, there you have it! A complete guide to vertical gardening. With a little planning and effort, you can transform your small yard into a thriving garden oasis.
Now, let's dive a little deeper into each of these sections, providing you with more detailed information and tips for success.
Vertical gardening is a fantastic way to address the "how can we grow a garden with a tiny yard?" question. It allows you to maximize your limited space by growing up rather than out.
Think about it: you can grow a significant amount of food or flowers in a relatively small footprint. This makes it ideal for urban dwellers, apartment residents, or anyone with a small yard.
When planning your vertical garden, consider the weight of your chosen plants and structures. Make sure your fence or wall can support the added weight.
Also, think about accessibility. Will you be able to easily reach all of your plants for watering, pruning, and harvesting?
Choosing the right structures is crucial for vertical gardening success. For "gardening up," trellises, hanging baskets, and stacked planters are excellent choices.
For growing vegetables off the ground, consider raised beds with vertical supports, or even repurposed gutters attached to a fence.
When selecting your plants, think about their growth habits. Vining plants like tomatoes and cucumbers are perfect for trellises. Leafy greens and herbs do well in wall-mounted planters.
Vertical gardening allows you to experiment with different plant combinations and create a visually stunning display.
When planting, ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot. Use a well-draining potting mix and consider adding drainage holes to your containers.
Regular watering is essential, especially during hot weather. Consider using a drip irrigation system to make watering easier and more efficient.
Maintaining your vertical garden involves regular pruning, fertilizing, and pest control. Keep an eye out for any signs of disease or stress in your plants.
Rotating your crops annually can help prevent soil depletion and reduce the risk of pests and diseases.
Harvesting your own fresh produce or admiring your beautiful flowers is one of the greatest joys of vertical gardening.
Share your bounty with friends and neighbors, or preserve it for later enjoyment.
Vertical gardening is a truly innovative approach to gardening, especially when you're dealing with limited space. It allows you to "garden up" and make the most of every inch of your yard.
By growing vegetables off the ground, you can create a thriving garden even in the smallest of spaces.
Vertical gardening is not just about maximizing space; it's also a fantastic way to express your creativity. You can experiment with different structures, plant combinations, and design layouts.
Let your imagination run wild and create a vertical garden that reflects your personal style.
Vertical gardening can also contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle. By growing your own food, you reduce your reliance on commercially produced produce, which often travels long distances to reach your plate.
Plus, vertical gardens can help improve air quality and reduce urban heat island effect.
Vertical gardening can even bring people together. Share your tips and tricks with other gardeners, or exchange seeds and plants.
Create a community garden with your neighbors and enjoy the fruits (and vegetables!) of your collective labor.
Vertical gardening is a continuous learning experience. Experiment with different techniques, try new plants, and don't be afraid to make mistakes.
Each season brings new opportunities to learn and grow as a gardener.
So, are you ready to embark on your vertical gardening adventure? With a little planning, creativity, and these helpful tips, you can transform your small yard into a vibrant and productive garden.
Remember, vertical gardening is all about gardening up and growing vegetables off the ground. It's a perfect solution for those who think they can't have a garden due to limited space.
Embrace the challenge, get creative, and enjoy the rewards of fresh produce and beautiful blooms, right in your own backyard. You've got this!
Now that you've got a good grasp of vertical gardening, go out there and create the garden of your dreams, no matter how small your space. Happy gardening!
Remember, vertical gardening opens up a world of possibilities, even in the tiniest of yards. So, embrace the concept of "gardening up" and transform your space into a green oasis.
And don't forget, if you're wondering how you can grow a garden with a tiny yard, vertical gardening is your answer. So, get started today and enjoy the beauty and bounty of your very own vertical garden! Of course, you will find the best heirloom seeds at David's Garden Seeds.
Good morning. It is hard to believe that June is here already. I have lots of orders to ship out today. Thank you to everyone who ordered over the past week during our big sales.
Around 7:15am, the clear skies got foggy! I went out and took a few photos. So cool.
Then after Matt got here, we went out and picked a bunch of grapes and blackberries! The air was cool and it was very pleasant. The blackberry bushes are loaded.
Today, we have a brand new section on our website called Seeds On Sale. David has picked some seeds that we have an abundance of and right now they are on sale for 50% off. They are some of your favorites like the Blue Lake 274 Bush Bean and the Golden Bantam Sweet Corn!
This afternoon, I have another doctor appointment that I am not looking forward to.
One of David's friends came over to pick up some boxes. He also bought some Mother-In-Law's Tongue plants.
At 2:15pm, we left for the podiatry office in Pleasanton. The doctor gave me steroid injections in each ankle using ultrasound so she got the needle placement between the artery and the nerve. This was to stop the awful neuropathy I keep having. She did a fine job. The whole thing was very quick. My appointment was at 3pm but she injected me before then as we were early. Immediately, my feet were numb, the right one more so than the left.
The doctor walked out and I tried to get up and off of the exam table. I thought I might collapse from not being able to feel my feet but I made it to the chair, put my socks and shoes on and sort of shuffled out to the waiting room. David waited for me.
Somehow, I made it out to the truck and got in. Next, we went to the property tax office so David could protest an appraisal. I stayed in the truck. Then we hit a print shop. I stayed in the truck.
We finally made it home around 4pm. My feet numbly made it up the steps to the house and then back over to work.
It is now 5:10pm and my feet are still so numb. It is unreal how very numb they are. I am glad I loaded the dishwasher before we left for the doctor because I don't know if I could stand there and do it right now.
I looked it up online and I learned that my feet could stay numb for as much as 12 to 36 hours!
I just asked Matt to feed the fish and close up shop because I don't know if I can make it all the way over there with my feet this numb. Needless to say, Matt will be collecting eggs and taking care of the goats this evening.
Oh, good news. Right after we left the farm this afternoon, my phone rang. It was the neurology office in San Antonio so I have an appointment about my hand testing on Thursday for a consultation only. That way, they can get two copays instead of just one. They are sly...
It is currently 95° but the wind has really picked up which is nice.
Good morning. My total bilateral foot numbness finally went away by 11pm last night. I woke up on the couch at that time and they felt normal. No neuropathy pain in the night but after those injections, I sure did not anticipate any problems that soon.
I woke up to an email from the neurology office wanting me to fill out paperwork on computer. Signing with a mouse was ridiculous, especially with my carpal tunnel.
So far this morning, I have done two loads of laundry, taken the trash out, made the bed, fed the dogs, gotten myself ready for the day, and packed eggs for sale. I feel accomplished. David ordered breakfast tacos again from Farm to Familia. They are good.
David sold some of our furniture and now our Production building is up for sale. If you are looking for a large building that you can turn into a classroom or even a small cabin or home, check it out. This building is a Derksen built at the factory in Uvalde with lights, electric outlets, and three exit doors. It is top of the line. We don't buy anything cheap. It has a drop ceiling and a mini split air conditioner that has two indoor units. We've used it as a business building for five years. It is in great shape. We added linoleum flooring which is torn up so that will need to be replaced.
This morning, David and I will be in San Antonio for a doctor's appointment but Matt will be here minding the store.
We were gone a little over three hours. There were no in-person customers at all except for early this morning before we left. A man came by to purchase some grids and the pegs for them from San Antonio.
We got back at 3pm and I immediately went out to pull orders. Matt made seed packs that we needed for orders all day. A big bunch of seeds that we need for back orders finally came in around 4pm and then Matt really got to work. We worked until 7pm. David came out around 5pm to join us. Then Matt left at 7pm and David and I went in and I began the fun process of making dinner. Needless to say these are long days, especially when we have to keep making trips to town and we have them every day this week and a lot of days this month.
I was doing dishes last night and David said the pool was leaking. I ran out there and water was spraying out through a cracked hose and was going down fast so we will need to repair that. The hoses crack several times each summer. I guess the miserable heat is just too much for them. I wish we had the money to put in a built in pool so we wouldn't have to bother with all of that.
Good morning. It has been very nice not having any neuropathy pain over the last two days and nights. I got up around 6:15am and David was already up and working. I fed the dogs and then made breakfast.
This afternoon, David has to go into San Antonio to meet with the accountant again. I am not sure if I will be going or not. I do not want to but David may want me to go. Right now, I need to get ready for the day and go tackle all of the pulled orders on my desk from last night. I also have a bunch of orders sitting there just waiting for Matt to make seed packs from the seeds that came in late yesterday afternoon. We really miss having that third person who does all of the seed counting and envelope making but there just isn't extra money to pay an employee now.
This evening, they are supposed to come get the loveseat and matching chair that someone bought on Facebook. I guess I will have to clear a way so they can get the loveseat out of my office. It is cramped quarters in here. We had a very difficult time getting it in here. I believe the furniture delivery folks had to bring it in through the master bedroom instead of through the kitchen. Fun times.
Also, someone has shown interest in buying our Production building so we will probably have to be cleaning that out somewhere in the near future so it can be moved off of the property. We are trying to sell almost all of our buildings. If you need a very nice shed or a large building to turn into a cabin or some classrooms, come by and see us.
It is currently 7:30am and 79° with no rain at all today and lots of miserable humidity. It should hit 96°.
I ran out and watered the plants and got out to the store to find that it has been dismantled. If you are coming by for seeds, you can either order online beforehand and I will have them ready for you or you can come and give me a list and I will fill your order while you wait.
David is rearranging and changing the way we do business as we begin to sell our buildings so things are a bit of a mess. Right now, he is dismantling Fulfillment.
I went to San Antonio with David. We had a meeting with the accountant and then came home. After that, I got busy again with orders. At 6pm, I went in to make dinner for Gordon night.
The woman who wanted my loveseat and chair said she would bring some people to load the furniture this evening. David said if they would help him move a few things, she could have the furniture free. She said that would be good. Now, remember, David had my furniture on Facebook for sale and this woman contacted him and said she wanted the furniture and that she would come on Wednesday evening to get it.
My house is a mess right now because my office had to be dismantled so they could have the furniture.
We enjoyed chicken and lots of vegetables from the garden for dinner. The woman and her entourage never showed. David messaged over and over through the night and Matt stayed late in case they showed up past 9pm to help but nothing. No answers.
This was not a random person but someone to whom we gave summer jobs to both of her daughters. She could not even give the courtesy of a response and she lives just down the road.
The stuff that David prepared in Fulfillment to be moved is still standing there. Finally, David realized at 10pm they were not coming so he contacted Nacho to come out tomorrow to move this stuff. So we get to keep the furniture that she wanted to buy and we get to pay someone to help us move heavy items.
The loveseat is currently on its side in my living room with cushions all about, like some crazy artist's work.
In addition to all of this, my dishwasher is not working at all now. Three times I washed a load that never got clean because water is not even going in. So to top everything else off tonight, I had to hand wash all of the dishes from all day today plus last night since they never got clean at all. My island is now filled with clean dishes that I will need to put away in the morning. What else?
My head hurts but I could not get back to sleep so here I am. I was in bed last night and was rudely awakened by neuropathy in my left foot at 11pm. Thirty-five minutes later, the right foot kicked in. Notice that it has been exactly two days since my nerveblocks were injected. So that was a load of crap. I just cannot believe that those shots gave me two nights of no pain and that was it. The doctor told me it could last up to eleven months. Ha!
I woke up four times in the night, hot and uncomfortable. I had the fan going but it was a miserable night, especially after the neuropathy. That fun took over an hour of sleep from me.
Then I was dreaming about trying to buy a new car with a bunch of folks that I do not even know. That did not work out and I woke up at 5:41am. So here I am ready to start another day. I have a 10:30am appointment with yet another doctor in San Antonio today and the orders are piling up.
It has been a busy, disappointing week in so many ways.
My printer is somewhere in the kitchen along with the table it is on so I cannot print out new orders until I get over to Fulfillment.
David just told me he has others coming to help with moving stuff and dismantling the store. I had no idea.
I just made breakfast and now I have to get ready for a long morning.
So now I've been told the woman who did not show up or answer decided she is sorry and she can come tomorrow. I say no way but David says yes so I am overruled.
Time to go start work.
We arrived at the doctor's office at 10:05am. My appointment was supposed to be at 10:30am. They called me back at 11:15am and the physician's assistant showed up to talk to me at noon. Not a doctor. She told me that I would need to schedule tests. I told her my doctor sent me for EMG test but she said not until she talks to me. I asked about seeing a doctor not an assistant. She said no. Then she told me that even if I get carpal tunnel surgery, it probably won't do any good because it hardly ever works.
She apologized for the wait. I asked if it is always like this and she said yes. This means they overschedule patients and let them waste time, not getting any help. Her attitude tells me she couldn't care less whether or not patients get any help.
This was supposed to be about me getting my carpal tunnel nerve tested with electromyography. She said she will have to schedule tests if I want them but, again, the surgery does not work.
Then why would I have the testing, especially when I have been here for two hours waiting for absolutely nothing today? The assistant then said she would get a scheduler to come in. She never explained what the test was or how it might help me.
She left the room and ten minutes later, the scheduler came in. She told me she could not schedule me right now and that she would have to call me to schedule the test. Why? She would not say. At this point, I was fuming, hungry, and very tired. I fell asleep several times during the two hours we sat there waiting. So that was disappointing.
I am pretty sure that I will never go back to that crazy Neurology center and waste more time, especially when some assistant is telling me there is no reason to even try. I have known a lot of people who had carpal tunnel surgery and they got full use of their hands back. I cannot believe that I was referred to an assistant instead of a doctor and she did no kind of exam or x-ray or imaging, telling me it won't do any good to do anything. Unbelievable.
We came back and tried to get to work for a while. Now Shopify is down so I cannot mail anything. It is 6:20pm.
Nacho and a few guys came and moved some things. A woman came and picked up boxes for moving. Matt says we had two customers. One bought a few things and the other one just looked around and left. I wish I had been here because there is nothing in the store to look at, at least not for a while. The best thing to do is shop online and come by to pick up your order. Just about every product is taken down. The one good thing is that all of the Yellowstone coffee cups are now sold. We still have that beautiful air fryer, brand new in the box.
Then a little while ago, I kept seeing things on my phone saying that Elon Musk and President Trump are fighting. X is pretty brutal. Why on earth are they publicly fighting instead of trying to fix the mess that this country is in? I am so disgusted.
Good morning. It is Friday once again. Today, Trump has to go to the vet. He has something growing on his nose.
I was awakened twice in the night, one for each foot as neuropathy struck. Both neuropathy episodes were very light. In fact, on my right foot, it was just one toe, my fourth--very strange. However, it still lasted a while and then about two hours later, part of my left foot went off but, again, it was mild. I just don't get it.
Anyway, I am at my desk in the house now trying to get things back to normal in here. The living room is still a jumbled mess. I am quite disgusted with everything and pretty much everyone at this point.
It is 7:25am, and 77° with 90% humidity right now so it will be a truly miserable feeling day.
A bit of good news! Late last night, after searching most of the house, I finally found my ear buds so I can see some videos again. With David and other people out in Fulfillment all day long, I cannot watch any videos because they don't want to hear them. I have been searching for my missing ear buds for weeks. I finally realized they were in the black bag on my closet shelf. I pulled it down and, voila! There they were along with a lot of phone cords and adaptors I have been missing since our road trip back in February! I immediately plugged both sets in to charge last night. They are now ready to use.
It was a very long day. My feet are absolutely killing me and I am looking forward to falling asleep on the couch and getting some sleep.
This morning, David had a whole group of people here to move the furniture out of my living room and then to move a bunch of metal pieces up to the store. He also had a guy in here as well as three other people to help move and do things. The guy was not moving like he had a purpose in life so he got sent home early. The others left this afternoon.
A lot of things were moved up to the store. I spent the day trying to find seeds to fill orders after they were moved. The store is in no shape for shopping right now.
Then David got notification that his new drugs prescribed earlier this week were approved so we had to go to Walmart to pick them up.
While we were there, I found some comfy flip flops and wouldn't you know that I picked the pair without a tag. The cashier would not let me have them and she would not do a price check. I had to pay for the groceries we got, send David to the truck and go all the way in the back and find a pair in my size with a tag. This cashier was absolutely no help at all. They used to call for a price check and actually serve customers. No wonder people like shopping on Amazon.
We got home and I fed the fish and fixed a plate. We are all exhausted and everything is a mess.
Matt finally fixed the broken pool hose today so it is being filled now. He is out collecting eggs and putting animals away for the night.
Good morning. I had no neuropathy last night. I don't know what to make of it. It is 79° with a humidity of 88%. The high should be 101° so it will be yet another miserable summer day.
I really need to put my office back together today. I hope I have time.
One person came in to continuing moving seeds. Matt came in to print envelopes. I did a lot of seed counting and getting older orders out because the seeds are finally in. We had zero customers (so what else is new?) today.
My new bedroom drapes came late this afternoon so I will have to put them up tomorrow.
We had rotisserie chicken and fixings for dinner and watched It Came From Outer Space from 1953. These aliens crashed their spaceship and the main character and his girlfriend were outside looking at the night sky with a telescope.
They saw the crash. They then took a helicopter to the site. The main character climbed down into this giant crater and saw the spaceship and a giant eye. Absolutely no one believed him. This guy likes to write stories about outer space and he gets paid by magazines for his writing. No one in town likes him because he recently moved there from the big city and he doesn't have a job.
It was a good movie. It shows that it is hard to blend in and make friends if you don't fit the mold, if you are a bit different, or if you don't have the same boring job as everyone else. I know that feeling.
Good afternoon. I got up early and took care of the animals. Then I made eggs, sausage, and toast which was so good. I started some laundry and handwashed the dishes which, by the way, is getting old. I also started a load of towels and vacuumed the den.
We got ready and went to church. We came straight home and ate leftovers. Then I started putting my office back together a bit. I finally have the printer hooked back up so I printed a ton of orders.
Now I need to rip down the blinds and curtains in the master bedroom and see how the new drapes look.
Well, that was a bust. I moved on to cleaning the pool now that the hose has been fixed. I was in there for an hour pulling out dead bugs. Wasps kept on coming in. Where are they coming from? None on the back deck this year...
Matt put the pool shock out in the green shed so after I got out and got dressed, I went around back to the green shed to get a pack of shock. As I stepped out of the shed onto its porch, I looked up and there were four active wasp nests. I went in the house, grabbed two cans of wasp spray and marched back there. I got to spraying and sent them all to their just reward.
Then I fed the fish and locked up. On Friday, when the pizza David ordered everyone for lunch was delivered, they also gave us two bags of peaches. I cut them up just now, cooked them and made a cobbler. It is baking now.
The cobbler looks good. We are having pierogies for dinner, not homemade.
It is miserably hot out so I still have not collected eggs or put anyone away for the night. I will go out at 8pm which is in just a few minutes.
