This is our Doomsday Southern Pea Seeds section from David's Garden Seeds®. It gives instructions on how many southern pea plants are needed to feed one person for a year.
A cup of southern peas has about 200 calories. On a 1200 calorie diet this is about 6 cups per day. One plant will produce about two cups of peas. This is about 1000 plants a year. So lets say about 1200 plants a year for eating, seed production, and trading.
You will need about
2000 square feet of growing space to grow this many plants. Southern
peas like it hot and will not produce when it gets cold. They can be
dried or canned for storage. They will last a couple of days
unrefrigerated.
Do not plant all of your seeds at once. Space out plantings so that they do not mature all at the same time.
