This is our Doomsday Summer Squash Seeds page. It gives instructions on summer squash seeds from David's Garden Seeds®. As far as I know, summer squash only comes in yellow, green, and white unless it is a scallop and it comes in many colors. We show green and white here. Of course most people do not know about scallops. It is possible to fool scavengers since the shape and colors may think them the scallop is not any good.
This is our Doomsday Summer Squash page. It gives instructions on how many summer squash plants are needed to feed one person for a year.
Keep in mind that we are giving estimates for one person per year.
A cup 0f yellow squash has about 65 calories. On a 1200 calorie diet it would take about 20 squash a day. One squash plant can produce about 15 to 20 squash which is better when harvested as immature fruits.
When growing for seed production let them mature to their full size. They will not be any good to eat but will produce about 50 to 100 seeds.
You will need about 400 plants per year to feed one person and produce seed for future production, emergency and trading.
Summer squash can be dried or canned for future eating. You will need drying and/or canning supplies.
Fresh squash will only last 3 to 5 days without refrigeration, about seven days if refrigerated. Plan your harvest so you can eat fresh squash as well as be able to store your harvest.
