Make Elastic Hair Ties

I have just learned how to make elastic hair ties. You have probably heard of no crease or yoga hair ties. They are easy to make.

Instead of using coated rubber bands to hold your hair (like I have always used), you hold your hair in place with elastic ribbon. When you pull it out, there are no weird creases in your hair. There are no metal pieces for your hair to get stuck in and then get pulled out so this is a great way to go!

How To Make Elastic Hair Ties

You will need 5/8" elastic ribbon, some craft glue, scissors, and a ruler. You can find this ribbon online. It comes in many colors and styles, glittered, patterned, or solid colors. Cut the ribbon into approximately nine inch strips. I say approximately because some of the "yards" of this ribbon that you order online are less than a yard so your strip may be anywhere from eight to nine inches if you get four hair ties out of one strip. I fold the "yard" in half and then in half again and cut four equal strips.

Take the nine inch strip and fold it in half. Tie a single knot close to the two ends and then carefully pull the knot so it gets close to the ends, about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch away. Pull tight but don't touch the actual cut edges or they will fray. Once the knot is pulled tight, you will need to put a little bit of craft glue on the ends with your finger so the edges will not fray. If there are any loose or fraying pieces of thread, cut them off. Allow the glue to dry and you have your first elastic hair tie.

I have seen videos of people using a lighter to sort of melt the ends so they will not fray instead of using glue. It looks really cool, but I cannot do it without burning the ribbon ends.

I like to group them into specific packages of three, four, or five and give each package a name. Then I put them on a card and they are ready to sell or give as gifts. You can make them to sell or for your own use. They make great party favors and birthday gifts for any female with hair long enough to pull back. They double as pretty bracelets.
