Plant Fall Flowers

Now is the time to plant fall flowers so your garden beds look good for the cooler weather. I pulled most of my spring and summer flowers up because the excess heat and the drought made the flowers brown and ugly, especially my zinnias. Usually the zinnias last until the first frost but the heat was just too much this year.

Plant Fall Flowers - 9/5/22-9/11/22

Monday, September 5, 2022 - Plant Fall Flowers

Good, overcast Monday morning and Happy Labor Day! I hope you have the day off from work like I do because around here, a day off is hard to come by! Yes, our Farm Store is closed today but I do deserve a day off once in a while.

I went out to feed the fish and it is a little cooler than usual. No sun is in sight. I still have to go out back and feed the chickens, guineas, and rabbits. So far, I have eaten a banana and had some coffee. It is still dark, sort of, so I slept later than usual. I woke up four times in the night because of the mold that the weatherman says is very high. I still can't breathe right.

I got all the rest of the animals fed and watered. Then I came back in and made banana sourdough pancakes for breakfast for David and me. They were so fluffy and good! I have been seeing commercials for Cousin T's pancake mix so I found their website today and I ordered some variety packs. I am excited to try the different flavors.

Today we will be talking about how to plant fall flowers where it is still warm, like in Texas, As you may know, I wanted to plant fall flowers last week and I finally did on Saturday morning. Meanwhile, my zinnias, before we pulled them down, wanted to plant fall flowers so they did. I cleared out the two beds in front of the Farm Store and more zinnias came up. They are doing very well. They are now three to four inches tall and will be flowering soon, at least as long as the rain keeps up.

We were supposed to have rain the entire weekend. I think we got five minutes on Saturday. Maybe it was Friday. I thought it would be yesterday but we did not get a drop from the whole mess. Plant fall flowers this morning and maybe we will get some rain because it is pretty dark.

In your quest to plant fall flowers this week, don't forget to gently water them so you don't dislodge the tiny seeds. Once the seeds germinate, then you can water them regularly. Well, it is now almost 11am and once again we did not get any rain.

We never got any rain today at all. Matt came over this evening and grilled steaks. We watched part of season 6 of Better Call Saul as they finally made and released the 6th season. It is a good show. I looked it up and it is also the end so we will finish it sometime this week and then we can go back to The Rockford Files.

The monarch butterflies travel through here twice a year. It takes several weeks for them to go down to Mexico for the winter in September and we are going through that now. When you drive, the windshield gets filthy with them and then it happens all over again in March and April. They are all in the lights and grill of the truck, not just ours but everyone's.

Happy Tuesday! Last night, I could not get our Trimlight lights to come on. On my phone, it said it was not hooked up to the internet. It was already dark so I did not go over to the store to try to fix the problem. This morning, early, I went to the store and figured it all out and got them on. Yay! A few days ago we had a power failure so I guess it needed to be rebooted.

See Aaron plant fall flowers in a raised bed by the driveway.See Aaron plant fall flowers in a raised bed by the driveway.

Michelle is here cleaning the house. I am grateful.

Aaron is on the ground to plant fall flowers in some of our raised garden beds.

The house got cleaned and we had a few store customers. My eggs were once again sold out. I filled the pond again today after putting algae cleaner in for a few hours. The pond was pretty low so I set a timer for the water going in to fill the pond and came back in the house working on the website.

I went out to check on it about 20 minutes before the timer went off and found that someone very special had turned my water to the pond off. This was an employee. I asked if he did it and he said yes. Then he told me he heard water running and thought it was a leak so he turned the hose off. He did not bother to go to the end of the hose and see that it was filling my fish pond. He just turned it off and went inside Fulfillment to work. He did not tell anyone. I do not understand and I do not have anymore words. So now I have to ask his permission to fill my fish pond a couple of times a week? What?

Good Wednesday morning. We gave the chickens the natural de-worming spices on watermelon this morning. They are loving these hot spices. The best part is there are no chemicals and you can continue to eat the eggs. There are very few eggs now so what I have been getting over the last few days have gone into my refrigerator.

We interviewed an outdoor job candidate this morning. He said he will not start next Monday, September 12. By then, he may change his mind as so many others have before they even started. I can't tell you how many we have hired who never bothered to show up or call in. One of his main jobs right now would be to plant fall flowers and other fall crops as well as weeding, watering, fertilizing, and cleaning out the animal coops. I could be wrong but if you really need a job, don't you want to start right away? I am betting (only in my mind, not for real) that he won't show on Monday.

Currently, the Farm Store is open. I am in the house boiling some eggs and getting laundry and dishes done since there are no current customers. I would rather be in my home office working and getting things done than be out in the store trying to work with constant employee interruptions. Since I now have no one who works directly for me, they should be going to Matthew and David for advice or help, not to me.

It is now 4pm and I have noticed it getting darker in the house. I just took the dogs outside and the clouds are dark. Alexa said it is raining but it is not. It is 97° now. Okay. 4:09pm and the rain is coming down. The wind is blowing.

Today is Linda's birthday, one of my helpers who is no longer my helper...We reorganized back in July and David took my helpers to pull orders and do everything else that needs to be done. Linda is the fastest order puller we have. We will celebrate her later in the month but Happy Birthday, Linda!

The rain stopped after about 45 minutes. No more after that. I made breakfast for dinner and it was quite tasty. We watched two hours of MasterChef with the second half of the finale to go. I guess that will be on next week.

Next time they go, we will have them shaved.

Good morning. At 8am, David and I will be taking the puppies to get groomed. Matt usually does it, but he needs to stay here and run things on the farm. The Farm Store will be open today but I still don't have any eggs. They are just not laying much in all of this heat. When will the humidity go away? At least it has not hit 100° in the last few weeks. However, 95° is pretty close.

I unlocked everything this morning early and fed the fish. Matt is here now taking care of the backyard animals.

Today is my brother, John's birthday. It is time to get ready to leave.

We took the puppies to be groomed. We did some shopping, got gas, and got the car washed. Even after that, the monarch butterfly imprints are still on the windshield. There are still some monarchs flying around out there.

We got back and Matt called from the store telling me someone was asking for me. I went over and Denise with the Castle Hills Garden Club came to see me. Back in July, she emailed to book a day to bring out her garden club. That day is November 8. It was a pleasure to meet Denise today along with her mother. She wanted to make sure she could find our farm and check us out. By November, it should be much cooler and we should have lots of things growing around the place so they should have a good visit.

My sister texted me just a little while ago that Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II has passed away at the age of 96. I have been a huge fan since I was a child. Just yesterday at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, this photo above was taken when Her Majesty received the prime minister. She looked wonderful. We are very sad over this great loss to the world.

So now Charles is king along with someone we do not care for. We loved Princess Diana.

For the rest of the day, I watched the television coverage of Her Majesty, the Queen. I also worked on the website. We sold the last of the spring sets that is not all heirloom. Once that happened, I had to make a new listing on the website for our brand new 38 variety all heirloom Texas Spring Seed Set. It is on sale now! This is worth $149 but we sell it for $99.95. Originally, it included some open-pollinated and hybrid seeds. Now that everyone is into saving seeds, we revamped it to all heirloom. We recently revamped the Texas Fall Seed Set as well so it is all heirloom.

We got a lot of dark clouds and I thought it might rain again but it did not. Too bad. We really need some more rain.

A bit of a spectacular sunrise, wouldn't you say?A bit of a spectacular sunrise, wouldn't you say?

Good Friday morning. We are up early again today because we are taking Lucy and Ethel to be groomed today. Two is all we can handle at a time going out. We will get some more groceries while they are being taken care of. David found a meat market with good meats in it as well as other groceries in Jourdanton so he wants to go there again.

It is almost light so I will need to go open the store and feed the fish.

I got the store open and the fish fed. At 8am, we took off for the groomer's with Lucy and Ethel. They enjoyed the ride. Then we picked up some groceries at Walmart and at the meat market in Jourdanton. We came home and I put the groceries away. David left to go order some wood and concrete for another project. Matt texted that we had a group of ladies shopping at the store so I went over. I met them and we talked about different flower seeds. They were all wanting to plant fall flowers in their San Antonio yards. Then David pulled up because the dogs were ready to be picked up.

We drove back over to the groomer's place and picked up our cute dogs. I made some sandwiches for lunch and now it is back to work.

I have been working in the store all afternoon and it is now almost 5pm. I am ready to go home and start cooking dinner. My feet hurt. Looks like some rain clouds and it is getting a bit windy out. We will be open tomorrow from 10am to 4pm so come see us.

The almost full moon looked beautiful tonight. It never looks as good when I take photos of it. Good Saturday afternoon. It is currently 2:12pm and 91°, hot and humid and miserable. I am at the store with three sets of customers shopping. This is the first chance I have had today to get on here and let y'all know I am alive.

I have one and one half dozen eggs left today, all fresh from yesterday. You have less than two hours. Hopefully, we will have more for Monday. The chickens are beginning to lay more again but I can't say that it has cooled off much!

So far, every time I have gone to the restroom today, when I get back, there is at least one set of customers in the store. Maybe I should go more often--LOL!

We have an IT guy out here setting up outdoor cameras and other things. We now have parking lot cameras in addition to the other security cameras so we can see if someone is out there who doesn't need to be. This is good for our security, especially before and after business hours.

Our new employee handbook is being re-written and revised as there were many spelling errors and some of it did not reflect how we do things now. Thirteen years is a long time.

We met a lot of local neighbors and some sweet people from San Antonio today so that was a pleasure. We love meeting you and talking gardening. A few lucky folks got to talk to David today for a little while. He was in here watching the counter while I had to go do an errand for him. You just never know here at David's Garden Seeds®. I was in the Farm Store for almost the entire day today.

I put more algae killer in the pond this morning and now I am refilling the pond. We close in 21 minutes. At least I don't have to worry about someone cutting off the water to the pond. I can fill it up all the way this time.

It looks like we finally have the sensor correctly hooked up so when people enter the store, I will know and can go over to the store if I am in the house. There is so much that does not get done at home if I am sitting in the store all day long every day and customers are not there the entire day.

Also, if I am not disturbed by our employees when I am trying to get computer work done for the business, I can do a lot more. I don't really care if someone thinks xyz is not a good idea or if abc should be planted in a different bed. That is up to David and if David says it needs to be done, either do it or go to him about it. I have no say in those matters. I write pages, put out social media posts and add and fix things on two websites in addition to waiting on customers and stocking the store. I think that is more than enough and I really do need help. However, David decides on hiring and right now, we are not hiring.

We will be having brisket this evening. I actually had some for lunch and it is good. The Svengoolie movie is It Came From Outer Space.

Well, the time came for the Svengoolie movie. Joke is on us today. San Antonio chose to put, not arena football this time, but a high school football game. My feeling is if people want to see a high school football game, they should get out on a Friday night and watch, not make all of us in the viewing area watch a game we care nothing about. We tune in to see Svengoolie, not arena football or high school football.

So we watched The Rockford Files again. He gets beat up every episode. Every criminal in Los Angeles knows exactly where he lives and they visit him constantly at gun point and force him to go with them or they beat him and then go after his father. Why doesn't he just move that nasty trailer far from the beach, paint it, and go get a regular job. He almost never gets paid anyway.

Good Sunday morning. I have fed all of the animals, both in and out. David made eggs for us and I am trying to get this page finished for the week before we go off to church.

The sunrise was really beautiful this morning. I was getting the chicken feed ready when it started coming up, a big ball of hot pink fire. Awesome!

Of course, today is 9/11. Twenty-one years ago, we were attacked on our own soil by horrible people. It was a horrible tragedy. A lot has happened since then and many young people do not understand because they were small children when it happened or they were not even born yet.

We went to church. It was a good message. This church takes groups to the Holy Land so we are considering possibly going next year. This is a trip I have wanted to take since I was a teenager. It would be the trip of a lifetime!
